The Vermont based group formed in 2002 when Matt Burr noticed Potter performing at St. Lawrence University. They coined the name Grace Potter and the Nocturnals the following year and released their indie album Nothing But the Water. While the release wasn't a national hit, the band went on to receive nominations at the Boston Music Awards in 2005 for Best New Local Act and Best Local Female Artist. The band returned to the studio and released their sophomore set This Is Somewhere in 2007. Be Set Free was produced by Chris Funk (member of Decemberists) who also played various instruments on the record in Portland, OR. The album was mixed by Tucker Martine who has worked with greats like Sufjan Stevens and R.E.M. Needless to say 'tis been a non stop journey of excitement for Langhorne Slim. Since March 2008, the band have headlined over 150 shows and played major festivals such as Lollapalooza, Bumbershoot, Austin City Limits Festival, Newport Folk Fest, Sunset Junction, Pickathon, Rhythm and Roots, and SXSW. The band garnered heavy acclaim for their performance of "Restless" on the David Letterman show and were WXPN's artist of the month.
